About

Hi, I'm Shayna. I'm a complicated human being, sometimes self-described as a human disaster. Here's some stuff that describes me.

  • Class of 2023 at MIT (currently a freshman about 1/8th in)
  • Course 2A-? (Mechanical Engineering with a concentration in Electrical Engineering/Computer Science but not quite robotics)
  • Mixed Sino-Mauritian-American
  • Inventor of the midiKEY, a device that allows you to type in mid-air using a series of gesture while wearing a jewelery-ish device.
  • Maker and 3D printing enthusiast
  • Amateur lightsaber duelist
  • Fan of Iron Man and Tony Stark's philosophy that it's never too late to reinvent yourself and do something great
  • Owner of a very small Iron Man/Tony Stark Shrine and currently building my own Iron Phoenix armor
  • Currently running an experiment to find the terminal length of my hair

I did all the "wrong" things to get into MIT (not the conventional way, not the illegal way).

I'm a top 300 semifinalist in the Regeneron Science Talent Search 2019, an ISEF 2019 finalist, and was recently featured in National Geographic's November 2019 issue for my work on the midiKEY, which was quite literally built on my kitchen table. More on that is probably on my "what I did in high school" page. But I'm working to finish it to a functioning prototype and get a patent.

I use they/them pronouns because the singular they is valid.
